The Silicon Letter

Quick note before we dive in: Earn Out Loud is now The Silicon Letter.

Earn Out Loud was the name behind my initial idea: helping new investors earn their first investment dollars.

But today, these newsletters focus solely on the industry I’ve spent 15 years leading, and the one that’s given me the best returns as an investor: Technology!

The name should match. So, Earn Out Loud is now The Silicon Letter.

Same writer. Same investor-focused letters on AI, chips, cloud, and Big Tech delivered to your inbox.

You might still see the old name in a few places as I move everything over. But you don’t need to do anything. No resubscribing, no new sign-up.

Just enjoy the letters like the one you’re reading today.

Now, let’s get to this week’s story…

Hey!

After more than a decade in software engineering, I’ve learned that the most critical part of software isn’t building it.

It’s making sure people trust it enough to pay for it and keep using it.

So when I heard Amazon was releasing AI bracelets that listen to everyday conversations, I immediately thought of the red tape and privacy concerns consumers will have.

But as an investor, I saw opportunities for companies focused on solving them.

Here’s what’s happening.

Amazon’s Always Listening

Amazon released a new wearable AI personal assistant under its Bee brand.

The product is a small bracelet that could have a big impact on your life by remembering everything for you.

On one hand, it’s a valuable product that could drive a lot of business.

For example, earlier this year I stepped back from engineering to work on the business side of technology as a Business Analyst for Enterprise Apps. I’m in about 9 meetings a day and run 2-4 software projects at once.

That’s a lot of useful information, notes, summaries, and follow-up reminders that Bee Frontier could automatically generate and keep track of for me.

Or imagine you’re planning dinner with family and friends, and later the AI assistant reminds you of the exact restaurant, time, and anything else you discussed.

That’s the idea. Turn all your conversations into summaries, reminders, and actionable notes.

But to do all that, it first has to listen to all of your conversations.

And that’s where it gets complicated.

The Big Privacy Problem

Whoever wears the Bee bracelet is obviously comfortable with the device listening in, but is everyone else?

In my scenario, my coworkers would need to give their consent at every meeting.
Your friends and family might not want to be recorded.

Personal privacy matters!

Amazon says users have full control over Bee, and it automatically deletes audio after processing data.

But that doesn’t solve the problem. The data still exists. It’s just in a different form.

And no matter how beneficial a product is, if customers don’t trust it, the capabilities don’t matter.

All Wearables Need A Solution

Amazon isn’t the only one entering this market.

Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses are selling like hotcakes, but people still have similar concerns.

Meta’s smart glasses can capture audio, photos, and video without your consent.

So before consumers widely adopt these devices, companies may need to show how they can make AI useful without sacrificing the trust of the people using it, or people around them.

Why This Matters to Investors

As companies look to solve these problems, demand could skyrocket for tech like secure processors, privacy-focused AI, stronger encryption, and better data controls.

Companies like Apple, Qualcomm, and Meta are already working to solve parts of the problem, but we’ll cover that next week.

Big Beginner Insight

New technology always creates new problems.

As investors, it’s our job to understand those problems, who’s solving them, and how we can capitalize.

Keep investing in the tech shaping your future,
