What I Experienced Firsthand

I spent years and tens of thousands of dollars buying shares in companies like AT&T, Verizon, and P&G, only to generate about $1,100 per year.

It was great to have the passive income, but it was clear that it was slow.

Then I Tried Something Different

Instead of just collecting income from owning stocks, I started generating income by using them.

That’s when I began selling Covered Calls.

That strategy generated $914.35. Not in a year. In a week.

It’s not passive. But the action I have to take takes less than 5 minutes and generates income nearly 52x faster.

Some Clear Differences

Dividends pay you occasionally. Usually every few months.

Covered calls can pay you consistently. Sometimes every single week.

That doesn’t mean one is “good” and the other “bad.” It just changes how quickly you can build income.

So Which One Is Better?

At first glance, covered calls are the easy choice. But the truth is: neither strategy is “better.” They’re different tools that you can use at different times in your life.

The real advantage comes from knowing when to use each one.

Dividends are the obvious choice when you need income that’s completely hands-off with little to no risk.

Covered calls make sense when you’re willing to be a little more involved and can stomach a bit more risk for a chance at higher profits.

Both strategies work. They just work differently.

All month, I’ve explained how to generate income with Covered Calls.

Today, I’ll share my results so far in April.

Why?

Because I’ve been getting paid consistently for 16 weeks, and I know it will also work for you in a stable, growing market.

Here are the numbers…

The Setup

Keeping things simple, I focused on two companies in April:

• Nvidia

• Netflix

Week 1: Getting Started

My first trade in April was unexpected.

I purchased 100 shares of Netflix at a good price, fully intending to run a covered call strategy. But before I could sell the option call, the stock rose.

Realizing that it rose to a resistance level, I sold them for a profit, collecting $205.69.

Week 2: Nvidia Calls

My second trade in April was different from the rest. Instead of selling a covered call, I exited the Nvidia call option I bought a month earlier after the stock declined 15%.

It made a small profit. $65.32. Not a remarkable number, but remarkability isn’t the goal. Generating a consistent profit is.

I rolled the profit into my core strategy of Covered Calls the following week.

Then I went right back to selling covered calls for weekly income.

Week 2: Netflix Covered Calls

The following Monday, on April 13th, I sold a covered call against Netflix and immediately collected $324.17.

Two days later, on April 15th, I sold another and collected $319.17.

My total Netflix revenue that week was $643.34.

Total Revenue (So Far)

So far—just a few weeks into the month—here’s what the total looks like:

• Nvidia: $65.32

• Netflix: $205.69

• Netflix: $319.17

• Netflix: $324.17

👉 Total: $914.35

And the month isn’t over.

What This Actually Shows

Typical stock traders measure their success by the size of their wins. I used to be one of them. But honestly, 10x+ wins are rare, and it’s hard to be consistent when speculating.

Basically, I believe we were all using the wrong measuring stick.

In this game, success is about whether you can build an income strategy that’s consistent, low risk, and simple enough to do under almost any market condition.

We’ve been talking about covered calls for weeks now. Some of you tried the strategy, earned money, and have been kind enough to share your results.

I love seeing you win.

But it also frightens me to think that you might one day experience a win—and still walk away feeling like you lost. Here’s what I mean…

Last week I made $557 selling two covered calls. It took 10 minutes to execute, and I couldn’t be happier.

But both stocks skyrocketed that week, which meant I missed out on $2,300+ in gains because the covered call capped my upside.

Most beginners would call that a bad deal. They’d say I lost $2,300. But I didn’t. That money was never in my account to begin with.

Investors who think that way usually struggle with trading psychology. They obsess over what they could’ve made instead of respecting what they did make.

To succeed at this, you need healthy trading psychology. Building that starts with understanding the exact trade-off you're making when you sell a covered call, and genuinely being okay with it.

The Trade-Off

When you sell a covered call, you get paid immediately. No ifs, no buts. The money hits your account, guaranteed.

In exchange, you agree to limit the amount you would earn if the stock rises above your “strike price.”

That’s the trade-off. It’s why I didn’t collect $2300+ when both stocks took off.

But that doesn’t make the strategy a bad one—it means it worked exactly as it was designed to. It handed me immediate, guaranteed income so I wouldn't have to sit around hoping the market would rise so I could earn a profit.

To keep a healthy mindset about this, you need to know that every covered call comes with this trade-off. The strategy is meant to earn a reliable income week after week, nothing more. If you’re looking for big swings, this isn’t the strategy.

Why This Matters

If you sell a covered call, collect your money, and then get upset when the stock pushes above your strike price, the strategy isn’t the problem. Your expectations are.

Covered calls are only painful when you expect both outcomes: the premium and the full upside. You do not get both.

And that’s why your mindset matters so much here. Because once you internalize that, you transform. You stop second-guessing yourself. You stop thinking about gains that were never yours to begin with. You just show up every Monday morning, run the play, and generate a few hundred dollars before most people have finished their coffee.

Instead of getting paid for trying to time the market, I get paid no matter what the stock market does.

In a nutshell: I own great companies, sell their options to traders trying to time the market, and collect a small fee each time.

Step 1: Own The Right Kind of Companies

This is the first step, and often where beginners go wrong.

You need to buy well-known businesses with leading products and active options markets. These are companies you're comfortable holding long-term—think whales like Apple, Amazon, and TSM.

The problem is that these companies cost more than small-cap stocks, so beginners try this strategy with the cheapest stocks they can find to save money.

It never works out. Please, buy whales.

Here’s why the whales matter:

• They pay you at least 15x more than cheap companies. That’s because the premium you collect is directly tied to the stock's price and volatility. So, the higher the price and volatility, the more income you’ll make.

• Someone is always willing to buy options on them. This means you can consistently generate income week after week.

• If the market falls, you're still holding quality stocks. You own the cream of the crop, not small companies that may never recover their value.

Over the years, I’ve built a curated list of 24 whales that I trust. Companies I’m completely comfortable holding even if the market gets messy.

One Important Reality Check

Hey there,

It’s not every day that a top-ranked trader decides to change their entire strategy. But that’s what I did back in January.

Back in 2024, I ranked among the top 9% of TradeStation traders. The following year, I climbed to the top 6% by the end of Q1.

Naturally, anyone in my position would double down on their working strategy, right?

Wrong! More trades do not equal better results.

In fact, I’ve had better outcomes by doing less.

Here’s what happened…

What Changed When I Slowed Down

For years, I thought taking more trades meant more opportunities to earn profits.

So every night, I scanned my curated list of 30 tradeable companies, looking for great setups.

But after years of doing this, I looked back at my results, and it’s clear that the majority of my profits come from just a few trades.

For example, I took 215 trades in 2024, but my biggest profits came from fewer than 30 of them. The rest weren’t even worth the risk.

For me, more trades didn’t actually translate to more wins. It really meant making more emotional decisions, more mistakes, and too many small losses that ate into my overall profits.

So, even ranked among the top traders, I decided to change everything in 2026.

Here’s what my strategy looks like today:

1. Take fewer than 52 trades the entire year.

2. Sell Options more than I buy them.

3. Only buy Options on home-run opportunities.

I felt very uncomfortable for the first two months. I’d see a good setup and think, “I’ll leave money on the table if I don’t take this.” But I stuck to my plan anyway.

By March, I knew I was never going back to my old strategy.

My wins were more consistent. I hadn’t made an emotional decision in three months. And I had full confidence that I would make a profit on every trade I entered.

What I Actually Learned

Less is more.

• When you take fewer trades, you make fewer mistakes.

• When you only buy home-run calls, it’s easier to ignore the noise.

• As an Options seller, your income is constant and nearly predictable while keeping your risk at nearly 0.

The truth is, profits don’t come from taking more trades. They come from being consistently accurate and lowering your risk. By far, this is the best way I’ve done it.

What This Means for You

If you’re new to trading, it’s easy to think you need to be in the market every day. You don’t!

The best opportunities can take weeks or months to develop. And when they appear, you want to see them clearly, control your risk, and have capital ready.

Think twice before asking yourself, “What can I trade today?”

Start asking, “Is this trade actually worth taking?”

Fewer trades. Better decisions. Stronger results… Remember that.

Recently, I heard a popular YouTube finance guru tell their listeners not to invest in the stock market until there’s a 20% crash. The post has thousands of likes… and it’s wrong.

On the surface, the advice sounds like a smart move. No one wants to lose money, so if stocks are going to drop, why buy now? I understand that fear.

But you don’t know when stocks will drop. Do you?

Historically, markets drastically increase before they ever crash. And when that crash finally comes, prices are usually still higher than when you started waiting.

Here’s what I mean...

The Person Who Waited

Let’s say your favorite stock is at $100 per share, and you have $10,000 ready to invest today. But you decide to wait for a 20% crash.

That could take years. In the meantime, that stock climbs $100 → $115 → $130 → $150.

Finally, that recession you’ve been waiting for hits, and the stock falls 20%.

How much would that stock be?
$150 × 0.80 = $120

You waited years for the crash and still paid 20% more than you should have.

The Person Who Starts Investing Today

Now imagine your friend took their $10,000 and invested it while the stock was $100 per share.

Their investment grew whenever the market rose: $100 → $115 → $130 → $150. Now their total investment is worth $15,000.

Similar to scenario 1, when the market crashes, their stock falls 20% and so does their money.

How much would their total investment be worth?
$15,000 × 0.80 = $12,000

Even after the crash, they still have $2,000 of profit—$2,000 you did not earn. Plus, they’ve been earning dividends and compounding returns the entire time you sat on the sidelines.

I Understand the Fear

Nobody wants to invest $10,000 and watch it drop to $8,000 next month. It feels like losing. But the truth is: if you wait to avoid a 20% loss, you can miss years of potential 30%, 40%, or 50% gains.

Truth is: not everyone on social media is giving you sound advice.

Waiting for crashes sounds smart on the surface, but it might cost you thousands! Once you realize this, you can’t unsee it.

That’s why I want you to start investing now, keep investing consistently, and use dips as big opportunities to buy more—not the place to start.

Here’s What You Can Do

If you have money you’re ready to invest, do the following:

• Start with a portion today: You don’t need to invest everything at once. Put 25-50% of your money to work today.

• Invest consistently every month: Set up automatic investments to buy regardless of what the market is doing.

• When crashes come, load up: You’ll already be in the game, have experience, and will be buying more of the stocks you love at discounted prices.

The Bottom Line

The biggest risk for most beginners isn’t buying too early.

It’s waiting too long to start.

And if you’ve been following the market, you know stocks are down now. So, truthfully, what are you waiting on?

A few months ago, investors were happily paying higher prices for Amazon, Nvidia, and Netflix.

Yeah, there are levels to investing.

Most investors think profits come from two sources: equity increases and dividends. But once you own 100 shares of a company, you open the door to a third stream of income.

Let’s talk about it…

Why 100 Shares Matter

When you own 100 shares of a stock, you can essentially rent them to other investors.

It’s called selling a covered call, and it’s almost a guaranteed profit strategy, allowing you to earn money regardless of whether the stock price moves up, down, or sideways.

How Covered Calls Actually Work

Here’s the simplest way to think about it:

Let's say Amazon's stock is trading at $240 on a Monday. Another investor will pay you cash today if you agree to sell your 100 shares to them at $250 by Friday.

If the stock never reaches $250, you keep:

• Your shares

• The cash you were paid upfront

If it does reach $250, you sell your shares for a $1,000 profit ($250 - $240 = $10 per share × 100 shares), and you still keep the cash you were paid upfront.

Either way, you get paid.

Why This Matters for You

Owning 100 shares means you’re no longer an investor waiting on prices to move. You can generate income whenever you want.

This is how long-term investors earn consistent monthly income.

The Takeaway

If you're just starting your investing journey and don't have 100 shares of a strong company yet, that's okay. It will happen if you stay consistent.

You just need to know that there are levels to investing—and owning 100 shares is a milestone that most seasoned investors don't openly talk about.

When you reach it, you can get wealthier, faster.

Have you ever noticed that when stocks are falling, you have an overwhelming urge to keep your money in your pocket, but when they’re climbing, you want to buy as much as you can?

As a long-term investor, that’s a mistake.

Let me prove it with the story of Hetty Green—one of the greatest investors in American history.

When Markets Fell

Between 1895 and 1915, the American economy had its troubles. Banks failed, commodity prices collapsed, and railroad companies went bankrupt.

The New York Stock Exchange tumbled as investors panicked and sold assets as quickly as possible.

Hetty did the opposite. She understood falling stock prices were discounts, and she bought huge quantities of strong companies while they were dirt cheap. She made similar investments in both stocks and real estate throughout this period.

When she passed away in 1916, her fortune was valued between $100 and $200 million (equivalent to billions today).

Good News For You

More than 100 years later, human behavior hasn’t changed. Investors still panic, sell large quantities of great companies, and drive down stock prices.

This is your chance.

A Netflix Example:

Netflix reported earnings last week, and it was outstanding! The company beat revenue and profit expectations, and added more than 23 million paying subscribers in Q4 of 2025.

💡 Tip: Q4 represents the last 3 months of the year.

These are all signs of a business that’s still growing.

And yet, investors are fixated on whether Netflix is overspending to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery. So they keep selling, and the stock price keeps falling.

This is exactly the kind of scenario Hetty Green loved! She purchased shares of thriving businesses that were temporarily being punished for things that may not matter 3-5 years from now.

Keep This in Mind

A falling stock price doesn’t automatically mean a company is failing. Sometimes it’s just a reflection of investors' uncertainty about its short-term future.

But it also doesn't mean you should rush to buy without a plan. Your job is to separate the temporary noise from long-term fundamentals.

Happy Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day! To honor it, let’s talk about something he cared about very much, but is often understated: economic freedom.

Black Wall Street

Did you know that one of the most successful communities in the country was black-owned?

In the early 1900s, the Greenwood district in Tulsa, Oklahoma, was completely black-owned and self-sufficient. Residents of the community owned banks, stores, hotels, newspapers, law firms, medical practices, and even bus and airplane companies.

According to historical reports, a single dollar would change hands 19-50 times within the community before ever being spent outside of it. That circulation funded new businesses, strengthened families, and created stability that most communities rarely experience.

It was called Black Wall Street.

Ownership = Economic Freedom

In the early 1900s, America looked very different from how it does today. Segregation was legal, Black Americans had little financial resources, and although slavery was abolished, Black Americans were not truly free.

So, this community was built out of necessity.

Of course, residents needed resources for everyday life, but they also understood that ownership gave them economic freedom in America.

And that same principle applies today.

Why This Matters for You as an Investor

When you invest today, you participate in the same idea: Ownership in American businesses gives you economic leverage and, eventually, economic freedoms.

Sure, the tools are different, but the mission is the same.

And just like Greenwood, real wealth isn’t built overnight. It’s built through consistency, patience, and confidence in your process.

The start of a new year does something to you. Doesn’t it?

You look back at what you did with your money…
What you meant to do with your money…
What you almost did…

And for some reason, the new year brings a surge of energy to get everything right.

So let’s make this simple in 2026: If you want this year to finally feel different, pick at least one topic from this article, then give it everything you’ve got this year!

Here are five investments I believe every new investor should prioritize this year.

1️⃣ Enroll in Your Company’s 401(k) Plan

If you don’t know what this is, let me explain:

A 401(k) is an investment account that helps you save for retirement. Each paycheck, before taxes are deducted, a portion of your money is automatically invested in stocks, bonds, and other assets. Sometimes, companies offer to help by matching the amount you invest.

If your company offers a match, they’re offering you free money. Accept it. Always!

There are tons of details we can cover about 401(k) accounts, and I’m happy to do that another time. Today, all you need to know is that if your company offers one, it might be wise to enroll and start. Immediately.

2️⃣ Open a Roth IRA

I opened a Roth IRA at age 27, and I have never been happier with an investment decision. These accounts change lives. Here’s why:

At age 59½, you can withdraw every dollar you’ve ever made in the account and pay $0 in taxes.

Your eyebrows jumped off your forehead, didn’t they?

Even small, consistent contributions can go a long way!

Open one. Today.

3️⃣ Build an Emergency Fund

An emergency fund is about stability, and too many people overlook it.

Let me tell you a story:

Eighteen months after ChatGPT was released, my wife lost her job. No big deal. But two weeks later, I lost my job. All that happened while my wife was two months pregnant.

Do you know how we funded our lives for the first 12 months? Our emergency fund!

If 12 months feels difficult, aim for 3–6 months of essential expenses and deposit it in a high-yield savings account.

An emergency fund isn’t meant to make you rich. It’s meant to keep your finances stable when life gets bumpy and protect all the progress you’re working so hard to build.

4️⃣ Open a Taxable Brokerage Account

Retirement accounts are important, but there’s a lot of life to live between now and then. So open an individual (taxable) brokerage account.

These accounts give you a lot of flexibility:

• Money you can access before 59½

• An opportunity to take advantage of what you learn in Earn Out Loud newsletters

• A way to invest for shorter-term goals: 2 years, 5 years, etc.

You don’t need much to start. You just need a place to begin.

5️⃣ Automate One Simple, Boring Investment

Follow me…

1. Pick at least one broad and diversified investment like SPY, VTI, or another fund you like.

2. Set a monthly contribution

3. Same amount. Same day.

Is it boring? Yes.
Does it work? Also yes.

Consistency is what you’re going for here. After more than a decade of investing, I haven’t found a single strategy that beats it.

Welcome to the final week of the 4-Week Wealth Builder Challenge: Fundamental Analysis Edition.

Over the past three weeks, you answered 3 questions every great investor asks:

• Is this business worth owning?

• Is the company financially healthy?

• Is this business protected from competition (does it have a moat)?

These are filters that help you identify great stocks, instead of guessing and hoping everything works out.

Today, you’ll put all of them together, and by the end of this article, you’ll know exactly how to spot a great stock before you look at its stock chart.

Let’s practice with a company you already know and love: Google (Alphabet)!

1️⃣ Is the Business Worth Owning?

In Week 1, I asked you to answer three questions about a company you’re considering investing in:

• What does this business sell?

• Who do they sell it to?

• Can they still sell it hand-over-fist 10 years from now?

In Google’s case, here’s how I would answer them:

What Google sells: Google sells attention (data).

Who they sell it to: They sell it to businesses and consumers:

• Businesses: Google shows nearly 100 billion advertisements every day to users across Search, YouTube, Gmail, Drive, Maps, and Android. Businesses pay to reach those people.

• Consumers: Consumers pay for premium data and services across YouTube Premium, YouTube Music Premium, Google One, and Google Workspace.

The 10-year test: It’s hard to imagine a future where Google is less relevant than it is today. Ten years from now, the digital ad business is expected to grow from $600 billion to $1.4 trillion.

These questions help you understand whether the business itself is strong or weak.

That’s the first filter.

2️⃣ Is the Company Financially Healthy?

At the beginning of your investing journey, don’t complicate the numbers. Focus on the direction of 3 simple ones:

1. Revenue (should be growing)

2. Profit (should be growing)

3. Debt (should be reasonable)

Here’s what that looks like for Google:

Revenue growth: Google’s revenue nearly doubled in 5 years.

Profit growth: Profit increased by almost 2.5x in the same period.

Debt management: While revenue and profit increased, debt remained stable and manageable between 2020 and 2024. Actually, it was only 15% of their total profit in 2024.

💡 Pro tip: At this stage, you don’t need the numbers to be “perfect.” Your job is to make sure they’re moving in the right direction. More detailed analysis comes later.

That’s the second filter.

3️⃣ Is This Business Protected from Competition?

What protects Google from being overthrown by competitors?

Several things:

• Branding: Google is synonymous with online search. People don’t “search for something on the internet.” They Google it.

• Data Advantage: Outside of social media, Google dominates almost every category of online information—Search, YouTube, Maps, Gmail, Android, and Chrome.

• Size and Scale: The company has billions of users, which attracts billions of advertisers willing to pay top dollar for exposure. The system reinforces itself.

• Switching Costs: Leaving Google means giving up reach, performance, and data. That’s something very few businesses are willing (or can afford) to do.

These are defenses that make it difficult for new companies to compete.

That’s the third filter.

Why This Changes The Way You Invest

Notice what you didn’t do:

• Open a stock chart

• Ask about its current price

• Try to time an entry

• Worry about valuations

Most people start with price and hope the business works out. You did the opposite. You made sure the business actually deserves your attention first.

That’s the difference between intentional investing and doing what everyone else does.

Let’s run the same analysis on a different company with very different numbers:

A Final Thought

Most people learn how to buy stocks. Very few learn how to choose them.

The fundamental analysis you learned over the last 4 weeks will help you choose better stocks for the rest of your life.

Over the last two weeks, you’ve learned how to answer two critical questions:

1. Is this business worth owning?

2. Is this company financially healthy?

But today, you’ll learn one of the main reasons some companies become massive enterprises (like Apple, Amazon, and Nvidia) while others get left behind.

TLDR: Moats.

But here’s what that actually means…

A Simple Moat Story

Imagine you live in a small town of 100 people and decide to start a car wash. You’re the first one in town, so you get 100% of the business. Life is good.

Then your neighbor opens a competing car wash. Your business drops to 70% of the town.

You start offering free air fresheners with every wash to win customers back. Your neighbor does the same. You’re down to 60% of the town.

You upgrade the waiting area and add massage seats for busy professionals who need them but don’t have time to visit a spa. Your neighbor copies you again. Suddenly, you’re splitting the town 50/50.

For your final push, you make a risky move and lower your prices, thinking your neighbor won’t follow. Guess what—he does the same.

No matter what you do, your neighbor copies it. Your business is constantly at risk of losing customers because you don’t have a moat.

The Power of a Moat

Now imagine you start a membership program for all your customers. Everyone signs up, and they earn points every time they wash their car. Those points unlock perks they can’t get with your neighbor:

• Tier 1: 20% off a full-body hand wax.

• Tier 2: A free upgrade from regular to deluxe wash.

• Tier 3: Mobile car washes at their home.

Now, it feels inconvenient for your customers to go to your neighbor (or anyone else). If they leave, they’ll lose the rewards points they already earned. So they keep coming to you. Month… after month.

Now you have a moat! You have something that protects your profits from any competitor in the market.

What a Moat Really Is

A moat is just a competitive advantage unique to your business and can’t be copied overnight.

It’s the reason customers stay with you, the reason competitors struggle to keep up, and the reason profits keep coming year after year.

Companies with a strong moat don’t fight for every dollar. Business comes to them naturally. And as an investor, those are the businesses you want to own.

Moat Examples Worth Studying

• Apple has its ecosystem—iPhone, iPad, AirPods, Mac, and services all working together. Switching to Android feels like starting over, so most customers don’t.

• Amazon has Prime memberships. They unlock faster shipping, entertainment, and everyday convenience customers don’t want to give up.

• Nvidia has CUDA. It’s a programming platform designed specifically for developers using their AI chips. Once developers start building on it, switching to a different chip becomes incredibly inconvenient.

Action Steps You Can Take Today

Pick a company you’re thinking of investing in and ask:

• Does this business have a moat?

• If so, what is it? Be clear!

• If not, do I still want to invest?

If you don’t have the answers, ask Google. I want you to be clear about your answers.

Last week, you took a stock of your choice and answered the most important question every investor asks: “Is this business worth owning?”

We walked through a step-by-step example of how to answer that question. Using Amazon as a case study, we answered questions like:

• What does this business sell?

• Who do they sell it to?

• Can they still sell it hand over fist 10 years from now?

That taught you how to identify a good business opportunity in less than 10 minutes.

Today, you’ll learn how to verify that business using the company’s financials. And the best part is you won’t drown in numbers and spreadsheets. Actually, today, you won’t look at them at all.

The Traditional Path Is Not For Beginners

Traditionally, investment analysts consider:

• Income statements

• Balance sheets

• Cash flow reports

• Ratios, margins, and growth rates

But as a beginner, that’s all completely unnecessary. At this stage, simplicity is your best friend. Do not try to analyze everything. Just focus on three simple numbers.

3 Financial Questions That Matter Most to Beginners

1️⃣ Is The Company Profitable?

Very few beginners ask this question, but it’s an important part of understanding whether a business is on its way to success or financial ruin.

Every business earns and spends money. But healthy companies earn more than they spend, and whatever’s left over is their profit. Without it, companies will always finance purchases with debt. That’s dangerous if it’s their only option.

So before you invest in any company, ask Google:

• Is this company profitable?

• Has it been profitable more often than not?

Your job is to look for consistency over time.

💡Pro tip: If a business has been around for years and still can’t turn a consistent profit, that’s a warning sign.

2️⃣ Is Revenue Growing?

Revenue is the total income earned from the product or service a company sells. If you’re considering investing in a company, its revenue should be growing.

Look for:

• Sales trending up over time

• Not flat

• Not declining

If revenue is growing, it means the company’s still relevant and customers are still willing to pay for what it sells.

💡Pro tip: Short-term (3-6 months) revenue hiccups are common, and great companies recover all the time. But long-term (9+ months) revenue declines are really difficult to recover from. If you see this, it’s a red flag.

3️⃣ Is The Company’s Debt Unreasonable?

Here’s the truth… Nearly all 500 companies in the S&P carry debt on their balance sheets. Most companies would rather spend someone else’s money before their own—that’s business.

The question is:

• Does the debt seem unreasonable compared to the profits they earn?

Why is this important?

Imagine the economy slows and sales drop. How will the company pay its debts? What if interest rates increase and they don’t have enough free cash to keep up with the pace?

Circumstances change all the time, and if a company has light profits and heavy debt, it sets itself up for a very bumpy road.

Action Steps You Can Take Today

Pick one company and answer those three questions:

1. Is it profitable?

2. Is revenue growing?

3. Does the debt look reasonable?

Remember, at this stage, you aren’t looking for perfection in the numbers—just direction and consistency.

Is This Business Worth Owning

I, and every investor I have ever respected, always start by understanding a company’s business before asking about its stock price—price is just an afterthought.

Consider this:

• What does this business sell?

• Who do they sell it to?

• Can they still sell it hand over fist 10 years from now?

If you can answer those three questions clearly, you’ll have a better understanding of whether or not this business is worth your investment.

Want an example of how this works?

• Amazon sells everything, literally. Even cars.

• They sell it to everyone—you, your mom, small businesses, Fortune 500 companies, etc.

• In 50 years, individuals, small businesses, and Fortune 500 companies will likely need more of what Amazon sells (data show that as the population grows, so does consumer spending).

See how that works?

Now contrast that with companies that sell products people don’t need anymore, like GameStop. On a stock chart, businesses like that might look like a “great deal” because it’s affordable, but underneath all the unworthy hype, the fundamentals are shaky.

💡 Pro tip: Investing is about owning stocks of great and growing businesses earning profits year after year, not stocks of any business just because it’s affordable.

Action Steps You Can Take Today

Pull up a company you’re interested in and ask yourself:

1. Can I explain this business in two sentences?

2. Do people need it, or do they want it sometimes? (If they need it, who’s paying for it?)

3. Will this company still make sense 10 years from now?

If the answers aren’t clear, it’s alright to pass on the company. That’s called being selective—and you want to be very selective with where you invest your money.
